Cyber Sandwich for grades 3-12

Cyber Sandwich:

Students work in partners through this structured pair share with accountability.

If you are new to using EduProtocols and want to try one out, this is an excellent starter!

Circle around to this EduProtocol over and over to crunch through your content and reinforce comprehension through deep reads.

  • Step 1: Student one and two will spend ten minutes independently reading the same selection. Students may use any annotation techniques used in class. Both students will enter their findings on slide one or two. (students follow the color coding on the template).

Step 2: Students will spend five minutes discussing their findings with their partner and completing a Venn diagram together on Slide Two. What did you notice and what did I notice that was the same or different. (The goal is to deepen understanding of the article that was read.)

Step 3: Using the shared research and Venn diagram, each student will write his or her own paragraph summarizing the reading selection.

Step 4: Each team will take turns presenting their findings to the class, other groups, or a partner.

Modification: Students may read articles with contrasting viewpoints. They will then compare and contrast the two topics based on the information gathered on the slides.

A modified Cyber Sandwich for K-2

For younger students, Cyber Sandwich can be a mouthful. (pun intended!) Instead of overwhelming younger students who may still be learning technology skills, complete the first half of the Cyber Sandwich together (the shared reading and note taking). Then have students pair-share and then write. As they become familiar with the process, use PB&J as a scaffold until they are ready to take on other parts of the Cyber Sandwich one at a time.

  • Step 1: Read content such as a book or Newsela article together.

Step 2: Take notes together as a class.

Step 3: Students then pair share about the reading material with a partner.

Step 4: Students write about the content using the teacher shared notes as needed for the writing.

For emergent writers, use sentence stems to support student writing. Description text goes here
